PART 3

The truth settled over me piece by piece, cold and heavy. Linda had not just attacked me out of malice; she had protected a secret that Ethan had kept running right under my roof.

When Ethan finally walked me out of the hospital days later, refusing to let his mother answer our calls, we sat in total silence in the driveway of our suburban home. He didn’t look at me as he cut the engine.

“You knew,” I said. My voice didn’t even shake. It was hollow.

Ethan stared through the windshield at the garage door. “My mother set it up. After our first year of marriage. She said you weren’t stable enough for a family, that our finances couldn’t handle it. She paid the clinic. She threatened to cut off my inheritance if I told you.”

“You let her mutilate my medical history. You let her pretend we were trying for a baby.”

“I was weak,” he whispered, finally turning his head. “I didn’t know she was going to… I didn’t know she’d do what she did at the party.”

“She did it because she knew you wouldn’t stop her,” I said.

I didn’t go inside the house. I walked straight to the guest room closet, grabbed my overnight bag from the top shelf, and packed my essentials in under ten minutes. Ethan stood in the doorway, watching me with empty eyes, offering no argument, no defense, no help.

ENDING

I left my wedding ring on the kitchen counter beside the empty champagne flute I had saved from the night before.

Outside, the Denver air was sharp and clear. I got into my car, started the engine, and drove away from the house with the warm lights, leaving the wreckage of a marriage built entirely on lies behind me in the driveway.
